8.7 Creating and scheduling Observers

The Observer role allows for scheduling of a multi-purpose exam participant who can access OSCE stations flexibly at any point during the exam. The use of this role will vary depending on the local exam format. Common examples include proctoring e.g. carrying out ID checks/general observation and exam support/troubleshooting.

The Observer role is not available on the iPad app. The Observer does not have access to the station mark sheet. Use of the role eliminates the potential for supplementary submission of marks that subsequently need to be removed after the exam.

Once logged into an exam, an Observer can navigate through all sessions, circuits and stations where they have been scheduled. Clicking ‘connect’ will connect them to the appropriate station where they can view the interaction between the examiner, candidate and role player. The Observer is muted by default and cannot be seen by others.

Observer access to an exam in risr/assess

Using their ID and Password, an Observer can log into the exam they are scheduled to. Depending on the exam mode, they may launch into the exam straight away or reach a holding screen.

The observer can use the navigation arrows in the top right hand corner of their screen to move between stations within their circuit. To observe a station, the Observer will click Connect. On entry to the station they will be muted by default and cannot be seen by the examiner/candidate/role player.
